Grande Albergo Internazionale is a historic hotel based in Brindisi. In 1943, in an era where the city was Italy’s Capital, this historic mansion located in Brindisi’s city centre hosted for around twenty days Vittorio Emanuele III and his wife, Queen Margherita. The King and the Queen of Italy stayed here after being sent away from Rome in the eve of 9 September along with the Head of Government and some military leaders straight after the Armistice agreed with the US forces.

Brindisi was the place where the King tried to reassemble an army and a State in disarray when the Second World War was drawing to an end.

“The painstakingly symmetrical rooms of Grande Albergo Internazionale, which are now marked with n. 101 and 123, hosted for twenty days in September 1943 the King and Queen of Italy. Between the two rooms lies the conference hall from where the Country was temporarily ruled. Not only, even Gandhi spent a few days here before heading to London (one hall bears his name).
